The Passionate Teacher, R.L. Fried
Chapter 5: “The Greatest Obstacle We Face”, AKA The Game of School, GOS
Students play an important role in their education. It is critical that students realize that they are as responsible for their learning as their teacher is. This concept is known as learner-centered education. The students are responsible for asking questions and should not feel embarrassed for doing so. The author, R.L. Fried, mentions this several time throughout the text. Students today do not wish to give the impression to others that they care about their education so they begin to actually stop caring. They should not wait for others to ask questions, they should take the initiative. Students also should realize that it is OK to disagree with others’ ideas.
Some indicators that the game of school, GOS, is being played are when students fail to think for themselves and are apprehensive to ask questions. Students will attempt to give the impression that they are not interested and some will submit trite and meaningless work and present it as if it were significant. On the other hand, teachers will present material without ensuring student comprehension and give short-answer exams to prevent long correction times. Administrators prefer quiet, well-behaved students regardless of how much they are learning. Parents will force their children to takes classes and join activities only to improve their transcripts despite the child’s interest in the subjects.
Fried gives the impression that the so-called GOS does little to improve education. Although he makes it clear that those committing the acts listed above are not horrible people, he does imply a sense of indolence on behalf of the education system, students and parents.
